Operating System and Its types

What is operating system?

Operating System: A program which acts as an interface between a user of a computer and the computer hardware is called operating system. The aim of an operating system is to provide cloud or an environment in which a user may execute programs. The primary purpose of an operating system is thus to make the computer system convenient to use. Operating system is the most important program that run a computer. This system perform basic tasks such as identifying input from the keyboard, sending output to the monitor, keeping tracks of files and directions on the disk and controlling peripheral devices such as printers and disk drives.

 Types of Operating system- We are given the different types of operating systems and few example respectively.

Graphical User Interface (GUI) Operating System:GUI contains graphics and icons and is generally navigated by using a computer mouse.  Example of GUI: Mac OS, Microsoft windows, X Window System.

  Multi-user Operating System:This system allows for multiple users to use the same computer at the same time or different times. Example of Multi-user OS: MVS,UNIX .

 Multiprocessing Operating System:An operating system able to support and utilize more than one processor. Example of Multiprocessing OS: OS/2,UNix.

  Multitasking Operating System:This system is able to allow multiple software processes to run at the same time. Example of Multitasking OS: Microsoft windows, Linux.

 Multithreading Operating System:This system allow different parts of a single software program to run concurrently. Multithreading is the ability of an operating system to execute various parts of program, called threads, simultaneously . Example of Multithreading OS: Unix,Linux, Windows 2000.
